Preto Pica is a small annual grass that can grow up to 1m in height and is native to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical areas of South America, Africa, Caribbean and the Philippines.
Pica preto is rich in flavonoids, terpenes, fenilpropanoidi, lipids and benzenoidi. Back in 1979-80, scientists had demonstrated that the specific elements found in the plant had toxic action against bacteria and fungi. Moreover, many of the flavonoids in pica preto have an antimalarial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Finally in 1996 were discovered the elements that showed photochemical action against transformed human cells.
Preto Pica has been the subject of a recent clinical study that supported many of its traditional uses. A research group in Taiwan reported that the extract of this plant is capable of protecting the liver from a variety of toxins, as well as having anti-inflammatory action. In 1999, a Brazilian research group confirmed the anti-inflammatory action attributed to an immunomodulating effect (the extract reduced the amount of pro-inflammatory immune cells in the blood). In addition, new research has documented that the pica preto extract inhibited prostaglandin synthesis and activity of cyclo-oxygenase, that is to say of two chemical processes bodily disorders related to inflammation.
Other areas of research have validated the traditional use of pica preto for ulcers and diabetes. Leaf extracts have shown action against gastric lesions chemical or bacterial and anti-ulcer greater than that of two drugs commonly prescribed for ulcers. Another study has shown a hypoglycemia and the ability to increase insulin sensitivity. Moreover, it was shown that this plant is capable of preventing hypertension and lowering blood pressure and levels of triglycerides. Finally, an extract of leaves has been shown to possess a property of light muscle relaxant for the heart.
Preto Pica has a long use in folk medicine for all types of infection, from those of the upper respiratory tract, such as colds and influenza, to those of the urinary tract, to the venereal diseases and infected wounds. All these uses have been confirmed by scientific research in numerous studies in vitro. Extracts of the leaves of the plant showed antibacterial activity against several types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Salmonella, against mycobacteria mycobacteria such as tuberculosis and against yeasts such as Candida albicans. Many of these antimicrobial activities have been attributed to a group of chemicals called poliacetileni.
Other traditional uses that have been validated by research are those against malaria and snake bites.
A final area of research has focused on the possible anticancer activity. In 1995, he was shown a preto antileucemica of pica and, in 2001, was tried as this plant could inhibit the growth of 5 strains of leukemia at a dose less than 200 mcg per ml.
Preto Pica has a long history of use among the indigenous people of Amazon, and virtually all parts of the plant are used. Generally, the entire plant is uprooted and prepared in decoctions or infusions for internal use, or reduced to pulp for use outside.
